Some tips to get you started
- I would say that one of the most important tips for a beginner to remember
when playing at the poker tables, and to act on without fail is to fold
as quickly as possible if you have a poor hand. Winning at poker
is almost as much about cutting your losses as counting your winnings.
- Never play at a table in which you don't feel confortable.
- Master the basics and start small before you start
playing poker for larger amounts - first feel confident. Most casinos
will have a play for free option so practice on them before wagering real
money.
- Observe what the other players are doing. Try spot
stronger players - know your competition and you will eventually be able
to spot those more likely to bluff.
- If your hand is real strong, and you believe you could collect the pot,
then don't be afraid to raise the pot but only if you
can afford it. Pace yourself and don't scare the other players off. Remember
you want as much in the pot as possible before you win it.
- Winning at poker is great but DON'T play more than you can afford
- the bills still need to be paid at the end of the month!
- Take your time and don't let the speed of the other
players affect your judgement - if you need a few more seconds to check
your hand then do so. Of course you can't take ages but don't feel pressured
to make a bet if you are not happy with it.
- The main objective with poker games is to beat the other players hands,
so don't get carried awy with the betting. The next hand
won't be long in coming and if your cards aren't worth betting on, your
money will disappear.
- Above all, ride with the highs and lose as little as possible.
It's a thrilling and exciting game, so enjoy it and good luck
at the tables.
Poker Etiquette
There is a proper etiquette to poker playing. Below are guidelines to
help transform anyone into a poker playing gentleman (or lady).
- Be careful with your choice of words. Don't swear or use abusive language
at the table.
- Be polite to the dealer and to the other poker players.
- Play at a decently fast pace. Don't make others wait by playing too
slowly.
- Wait your turn to act or place a bet.
- Arrange your chips in a tidy manner and place them (rather than throwing
them) into the pot. Don't make a mess because it prevents others from
being able to calculate the amount of money in the pot.
- When betting, only grab the amount you intend to use.
- Don't flirt at the table. If you are attracted to someone, wait until
after the game to make your move.
- Don't comment on anyone's hand during the game to avoid giving unfair
hints.
- Try to limit unnecessary chatter to avoid disturbing the concentration
of your fellow players.
- Most importantly, be modest if you win big.
